How much does a website cost in Ireland?

Most small business websites in Ireland are quoted between €1,500 and €6,000, with freelancers at the bottom of each range and agencies at the top. A one to three page site on a subscription page builder is quoted at €500 to €1,500 plus the monthly fee. Ours is €500, and €300 a year after the first year.

Quotes for the same job land miles apart, and most of the gap comes from who is doing the work and what is bundled into the figure.

What are the common ranges?

These figures come from the price guides agencies and freelancers publish themselves.

A basic site of one to three pages on a subscription page builder is commonly quoted at €500 to €1,500, plus the monthly subscription for as long as the site stays up. The build figure is only part of what you pay.

A brochure site of three to six pages from a freelancer or small agency is commonly quoted at €1,500 to €3,500. That is the standard job for a trade or a single location service business.

A small business site of five to ten pages is commonly quoted at €2,500 to €6,000. Page count, photography and who writes the words decide where inside that band you land.

A custom build with copywriting and search work is commonly quoted at €4,000 to €12,000.

Online shops and booking platforms are quoted separately and start higher than all of the above, because payments, stock and a live calendar are a different piece of work to a set of pages.

Why does the same job get four different prices?

Three things move a quote more than anything else.

Who is building it. A freelancer carries their own time. An agency carries an office, account management and a project manager, and that shows up in the number.

How much of it you supply. Handing over your own words and your own photos costs less than paying somebody to write and shoot them.

What is included after launch. Some quotes are a build and nothing else. Some carry a year of hosting and changes inside the figure. Two quotes that look identical on the day can mean very different things twelve months in.

What does a monthly or yearly fee cover?

A recurring fee can mean three separate things, and the same word gets used for all three.

Hosting and upkeep. Keeping the site online, backed up, patched and secure. That is real work and it should be a small figure.

Changes made for you. Somebody edits the page when you ring. Worth paying for, because the alternative is learning a system yourself to change a phone number.

Renting a site you never own. Some arrangements never hand the site over. Stop paying and it disappears, because the payment was a lease. Ask about this directly and get the answer in writing before you sign. Our guide on who owns your website goes through how to check each part.

Is there help with the cost?

In Ireland, the Local Enterprise Office runs a Trading Online Voucher worth up to €2,500, covering 50% of eligible costs for small businesses getting online. Eligibility and the paperwork change from time to time, so ring your own office and ask before you build a budget around it.

How to read the quote in front of you

Ask whether VAT goes on top. Some firms are registered and some are not, so the headline figure can move by 23% depending on which you are talking to.

Ask what happens in month thirteen. Hosting, changes and renewals all have to live somewhere. If the quote covers the first year, find out what the second year costs before you compare it against anything.

Ask what a new page costs. Some yearly fees include new pages, and ours does. If the one in front of you does not, there should be a figure for it now rather than a negotiation in six months when you need it.

Ask who the domain ends up registered to. It should be your name or your company's, from day one. There are more of them in the questions to ask before paying.
