Where they started

Scott has been painting for years. What he did not have was a business of his own online.

The work was all there, years of finished jobs sitting in his camera roll and on an Instagram page. What was missing was the thing a recommendation lands on. Someone passes his name across a kitchen table, the next thing that person does is search it, and there was nothing of his to find.

For a painter, that gap costs real money. Most jobs come from word of mouth, and word of mouth now ends at a search box.

What we built

Twenty three pages under his own name, on his own domain.

• A portfolio of ninety seven of his own jobs, which is what a customer wants to see before they ring anyone
• Six service pages covering the work he does, from interior painting to panelling and attic conversions, so a search for the job lands on the job
• Thirteen town pages around Cork, from Ballincollig and Douglas out to Midleton and Cobh, so a search for a painter in any of them lands on a page about that place
• A contact page and a form going straight to his inbox, and click to call on every screen
• His own story on the page, in his own words, because people hire the person as much as the trade
• Privacy and cookie consent in place, an SSL padlock, and the domain registered in his own name
• Registered with Google and Bing, with visits, call taps and enquiries counted from day one

Where it landed

The site scores 100 on accessibility, best practices and search, and between 95 and 100 on performance, which moves from one run of Google's test to the next without the site changing. It loads in about a second on a phone, which is where every one of these searches happens.

Now the recommendation has somewhere to land. Someone hears his name, searches it, and finds his own work, his own words and multiple ways to reach him.
